Hi all!
Well I asked for topic suggestions for my 200th blog posts and all ya'll have left me to my own devices. So...
I came up with a really good one.
For my 200th post at Pitch Slapped, I would like to officially announce that my novel, GODSPEED, is now available to download from Amazon.com.
Yes, now.
Right now, as in this minute right now.
What?
I know! Can you believe it? I can't believe it. Squee!
Okay, now that I have that 'squee' out of my system (though I warn you there may be more, this is big stuff) I want to add that the print edition will follow very soon via Lulu and then Amazon (my proof copy is being printed up as I type this) so please keep an eye out for that announcement if you'd prefer print.
Why no big huge build up to a release date later in the month?
Simple. Life has taught me one lesson if it's taught me anything: now is the time. Soon as you can do something you want to do, you should do it.
I decided that since I was definitely keen on an early May launch and the formatting was finished much earlier than I expected (Thank you, Matthew...) that I didn't want to wait on the print edition to be ready before I set the ebook free.
What, you say? It's April 30th? Well it's already May 1 in half the world so I'm going with it :~D Especially since it's May 1 in the part of the world where the dear person who formatted it for me is (thank you again, Matthew.)
I never (truly never) thought this day would come and I am grateful to a lot of people.
I named a LOT of those people in the acknowledgements of the book (if you do read it, don't miss that, you might find yourself in there!) but if I didn't personally name you, please know that I had so many amazing people that fell under "Blogging/Twitter/Facebook friends" that if I'd named you all the novel would have been double the length. I know who you are, and I will thank you privately the first chance I get.
I am so grateful for the offers people have made to help promote the book, and there seems to be a little informal mini-blog tour shaping up because a handful of VERY kind friends have approached me and offered to host stops. I can't tell you how blown away I am by that. It means so much more than I can explain. (If anyone else is interested in participating in that kind of thing or talking to me about the book, just send me a note, I'm not hard to find.)
So, that, my friends, was my 200th blog post.
How far I've come since the first days when I knew nothing about the industry. Now I know more than I ever thought I'd know- and I am completely at peace with the choices I've made. For me, with this novel, indie was the only way to go :~D (I just wish I knew why Amazon estimates the length at 199 pages- in Word it was 250. In the print version (small book, I wanted it that way) it'll be 406 pages! So there you go. It's roughly 70K words for those who are curious about that sort of thing.)
Anyway, happy 200th post to Pitch Slapped: looking forward to many more posts here, and hoping you'll still be here beside me.
Oh, before I go: I am thinking of giving away a few print copies of GODSPEED when they are available, and maybe a couple other nifty little items as well. The ideas are still percolating. When I know, you'll know.
When I do give them away (however I decide to give them away...) I'll let the winner decide if they want it signed or not, and either way you will see this gorgeous back cover when you turn the book over...
I told you it was gorgeous. (Thanks, Paul Brand!)
xoxo

Wow!!! Congratulations! I am very excited for you! Let me head out now and tweet/facebook about it!
ReplyDeleteDon't forget I'm one of the ones happy to plug you on your unofficial tour. It doesn't have to be right away. There's something to be said for stretching out the exposure instead of blast of publicity on one day.
I love how your 200th post is about thanking others. I too have felt so lucky to have gotten to know so many amazing people through blogging. :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 200th blog post and for your book release. Big year of change for you, Bru!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Bru! Hugs x
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!! I love how you say you've learned that as soon as you can do something, you should do it.
ReplyDeleteNow it the time. Yes! Your time. I'd write more, but I have to go order the book!
Congratulations, Bru! This is quite an accomplishment--so proud of you! :)
ReplyDeletewow! so cool.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, Bru! And your cover is truly gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI could use a little of your "seize the day" mojo. Sometimes I wonder if my caution is actually just procrastination. :-) Anyway, you're an inspiration! Happy launch day!
Your print version is too long at that word count. House is around 120K words, and it's only 350 pages in physical form. In one sense, it doesn't matter, but the more pages you have the more the physical book will cost, and I'm guessing that at over 400 pages you're pushing $20 for the physical book. For a book with only 70K words, that's too much.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm looking forward to it. Going to check out the Kindle format, right now.
Andrew, I thank you for checking out the Kindle version and for weighing in on the size issue.
ReplyDeleteI am in the process of answering everyone's comments privately in email at the moment but I saw this comment awaiting moderation and had to stop, wanted to answer this here right away.
I thought long and hard about the print size issue, and I chose this size because it was the size and paper I wanted. Originally it said it would come out to about 350 pages. At the end it was 406 and I wasn't going to change the whole layout I had my heart set on for that. I have a physical book in the house I have done a comparison on, and I like the way it looks and feels in my hands.
I miss old style and size books- the kind I used to buy when I was a kid and bought paperbacks. I do not care for these big trade size paperbacks that everyone is doing now.
I consider my book an art object, and I know that most people will opt for the ebook anyway (who wouldn't, even if you only have a PC you can still get a free Kindle reader program and read it) and have read up on people in the industry, especially small presses saying that print sales are dying while ebook sales are what counts.
So I decided to make the calculated decision to do this the way I wanted- to make the book look like I wanted. Now if I get my proof copy and dislike it, then I know my best friend will change it for me. Unless there is something really strange about it though I don't see that happening.
People will pay what they think a book is worth. If someone, say, reads the ebook and decides they really want to have a print copy, then they will decide it's worth the extra five dollars to get it the way that I wanted it designed. I know I wouldn't let it stop me, if I truly loved a book (I used to buy all the books I loved in hardcover).
So anyway, I do appreciate your opinion (and am a little amused- once you told me not to give my books away now they're took expensive LOL) but wanted to say there was a lot of thought put into this, and that's why the book is the size it is.
Far as the price, Lulu often offers discounts too, so I'm not too worried about that either. The ebook option always exists for those who are seeking a bargain.
thanks again

Oh, no, if you're doing it on purpose, that's fine. Great, even. From the way you said it, it sounded like you didn't know why it was so long in print when it was only listed at 200 pages on the Kindle. I was just trying to point out that you -can- change it.
ReplyDeleteBut if that's the way you've -chosen- for it to be...
well, carry on, then...
Nothing to see here...
Woohoohoo!!!! I'm so excited for you Bru!!!! Congrats!
